my first experience assisting in a surgical procedure - I held the pup's tail, while the vet sutured a bite wound.

me and "my girl"
saturday night - october 8, 2005 - my last night at Pasado's - this precious pit-bull  was caught with a pole and a net. she was labeled a "caution dog". and everyone was told to stay clear of her. i worked with her all week. i applied aloe to her skin infections. i bathed her in rosemary and tea tree oil.  she and I bonded and last night she fell on her back (full beta and no longer an alpha) and let me rub her belly.  after these pictures were taken, I couldn't walk anymore dogs.  she was my favorite. she is the first and last dog I walked and fed. when I left last night, I gave her a raw-hide bone (which isn't allowed because it can make the other dogs aggressive) but I didn't care. she is going to a dog  sanctuary in arkansas. i love her and I know she loves me.

another of my favorites --
i spent alot of time with mary. I named her mary because she looks like a lamb. she is on her way home with cathy to los angeles. she will have a wonderful life. cathy is an angel. mary is blind. she was found in somebody's home. they left her. she had fleas and dermatitis and lost some fur. i gave her a bath to get rid of all the flea dander. we only realized how much fur she had lost after her bath. her flesh is white and before it was black. she had toxic sludge in her ears and the vets gave her antibiotics for her infected ears. i walked her with her IV pole. she LOVED to hang out on the concrete (in the shade) and rub her itchy face on the pavement. she was slow and bumped into things, but she NEVER ONCE made a mess in her cage. she waited for me to walk her.  I love her.

this is the wee pit-bull pup they found in a crack house in new orleans. there was a crack deal going on and the police busted in and pasado's volunteers followed to find this angel in the midst. he went home with jen, a local dog groomer who volunteered with us.  whenever we volunteers were grieving over the loss of a rescued animal, we would just pass this baby pit-bull around, from one pair of arms to the other.  it became our way of overcoming what, at times, was incredible sadness.

this is "lover", another "intensive care unit" favorite of mine. he still has not found a home, although I have some friends in new york who might be interested in adopting him.  he was found on tuesday night. when he arrived, he could not lift his head. after a day of fluids and food he was able to walk and I was responsible for his walks.  he liked to sit in my lap and rest his head in my hand. i love him. i nick-named him "mr. big head" cuz his head is too large for his emaciated body. the vet said it will take 6 months for him to regain his body mass. he liked it when I made "meat-balls" out of canned food and fed them to him.  he is a lover!!!

that's secrette peering into a window in new orleans.  she is calling to a kitty in need of rescue. and the mission was a success!  that's the kitty in the cage .... one of two that we were able to rescue!  notice the water level mark on the white filigree beam (left photo).

this is muppet.  he has a hereditary form of non-contagious mange. he is malnourished so his fur fell out and his mange took over his face.  when I left yesterday he was in critical condition as his lungs had filled with fluid.  he is heart-worm positive and I assisted in administering sub-cutaneous fluids to him yesterday. he is on very strong antibiotics and hopefully will recover. he has a bad cough, but still loves to play with his squeaky, stuffed cheese-burger. danica (from san francisco) is thinking about adopting him. EVERYONE loves this little-man.

marmaduke was the last dog admitted on friday night, october 7th. he is a bit food-aggressive, but no one blames him.  poor lamb. he has some hound in him because he talks back in hound howls when you speak to him.  he is very depressed.

this is a chicken that was rescued from new orleans and brought to pasado's.  this chicken was released into a pen, with other chickens, but he would not stay penned up and kept returning to the barn to be with the humans and hang out with the pit-bulls!

that's me giving a treat to the first pup that was loaded onto a truck headed for las vegas. the nevada a.s.p.c.a. drove to raceland, louisiana in this air-conditioned truck, to take back as many animals as possible.

this is me, taking a break
